Something is broken or underperforming. Analysis diagnoses, understands, and resolves it — without confusing "what is causing this?" with "what can be done?" Cards A, B, C, M, N, O are relevant here.

02Decision MakingWhat should we choose?
Choosing between alternatives requires structured thinking. Problem reframing and decision-linked hypotheses are central. Analysis only adds value when anchored to a real decision with real alternatives.
03Performance MonitoringHow are we doing?
Continuous tracking against targets signals when to switch modes. Symptoms vs causes, structural change vs noise are essential; most monitoring failures react to noise as if it were signal.

Anticipating and shaping what comes next
04Goal SettingWhere are we going?
Deciding direction, targets, and priorities. Cards E (MECE structure) and F (measurable variables) are foundational — goals that cannot be measured cannot be managed.
05Risk AssessmentWhat could go wrong?
Identifying threats before they materialise. Card Q (scenario & sensitivity) is primary — surfacing which assumptions are most consequential, uncertain, and likely to change.
06Opportunity DetectionWhat are we missing?
Scanning for possibilities before they become obvious. Card P (pattern discovery) is primary — inductive methods used responsibly, converting structures into testable hypotheses.

How to Analyse Any Situation

Six sequential modules

Reactive, situational, or proactive, analysing a business context follows a disciplined sequence. The six interdendent form a connected method where each stage produces an output that constrains and improves the next.

The cycle is iterative

The neat sequence is the conceptual order. The actual order analysts work in is iterative — findings at later stages routinely send the analyst back to earlier ones. A robustness test that fails reveals a poorly-designed hypothesis (back to Module 03). A causal analysis that contradicts itself reveals a mis-framed problem (back to Module 01). Analysts who treat it as a pipeline ship work too early; analysts who treat it as a cycle produce work that holds up.

How to Use This Programme

Worked, Returned and Use cards as a cycle, not a checklist.

Principle 01

Work through the modules in sequence

Each module establishes the conditions that make the next possible. Module 01 calibrates judgment so Module 02's structures rest on sound foundations. Module 03 selects hypotheses so Module 04's modelling is invested in the right places. Skipping ahead undermines the later work.

Principle 02

Return to specific cards as needed

After the first pass, the programme becomes a reference. A framing challenge → Cards B and C. A model with fragile results → Card L. A vague hypothesis → Card G. The cards are designed to be used independently in practice — a working toolkit, not just a training sequence.

Principle 03

Apply every discipline to real work

Disciplines become reflexive only when applied under real constraints. Each module ends with practice widgets — use them — then apply the same discipline to your next real project. The first application is the hardest; the tenth is automatic.

Principle 04

Treat failure signals as diagnostic information

When something in your analysis feels wrong, resist pushing forward. Card R's diagnostic table maps late-stage failure symptoms to their early-stage causes. A failed robustness test is not a dead end — it is a signal to return to hypothesis formulation and rebuild from a stronger foundation.

Principle 05

Use the self-diagnostic

Card R includes a personal failure-pattern diagnostic mapping the six modules to the symptoms that appear when each discipline is weak. Most analysts have one or two stages where their work consistently breaks down. Knowing your patterns is the most efficient investment in your development.

Principle 06

Tools serve hypotheses — not the other way around

The programme's deepest principle: tools are legitimate only when prior disciplines are established. No tool is universally correct. The discipline is knowing when each is appropriate, what it assumes, and what it cannot support — the orientation that separates mature work from sophisticated drift.
